Mastering the Art of Filters on Snapchat: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on July 27, 2023 by HowTo.help

Snapchat filters are a fun and creative way to enhance your snaps and add an extra touch of personality. Whether you want to transform yourself into a cute animal, try out quirky face distortions, or simply jazz up your photos with colorful overlays, mastering the art of filters on Snapchat will take your snapping game to the next level. In this step-by-step guide, we'll explore all the different types of filters available on Snapchat and how to use them effectively.

Step 1: Download and Install Snapchat

Before delving into the world of Snapchat filters, make sure you have the app installed on your smartphone. Head over to your device's app store (Google Play Store for Android or App Store for iOS) and search for "Snapchat." Download and install the app onto your phone.

Step 2: Create an Account or Log In

Once you have installed Snapchat on your device, open it up and either create a new account if you're a first-time user or log in with your existing account credentials. Follow the prompts to set up or sign in with ease.

Step 3: Familiarize Yourself with Snapchat's Interface

After logging in, take some time to familiarize yourself with Snapchat's interface. It consists mainly of two screens - one for snapping photos/videos (the camera screen) and another where you can view received snaps from friends (the chat screen). Swipe left from the camera screen to access additional features such as stories, discover content, memories, etc.

Step 4: Accessing Filters

Now that you're acquainted with Snapchat's interface let’s dive into using filters! While in camera mode (default screen), make sure both front-facing or rear-facing cameras are accessible by tapping on their respective icons at the top right corner if necessary.

To access filters swipe right across the camera screen until various lenses appear alongside thumbnails at the bottom edge. These lenses include AR-based face transformations ranging from animal filters to goofy distortions. Explore the available options by swiping through them horizontally.

Step 5: Applying Filters

Once you've found a filter you want to use, align your face within the facial outline that appears on your screen. The filter will then be applied in real-time, allowing you to see how it looks before capturing your snap.

For some filters, additional instructions may appear on-screen, such as opening your mouth or raising your eyebrows, so make sure to follow those cues for maximum effect. Experiment with different poses and expressions to make the most out of each filter's unique characteristics.

Step 6: Exploring Additional Filters

Apart from AR-based lenses, Snapchat offers various other types of filters that can be applied after capturing a snap. These include geofilters (based on location), time/date stamps, temperature overlays, speed effects (for videos), and more.

To access these additional filters after capturing a snap but before sending it, swipe left or right across the screen until you find one that suits your needs. Some filters may require enabling specific permissions (e.g., location services) for accurate results. Feel free to experiment with combinations of different overlays for added creativity!

Step 7: Saving and Sharing Your Snaps

After applying and perfecting all desired filters onto your snap(s), it's time to save and share them! To save a snap without sending it immediately, click on the downward-facing arrow icon at the bottom center of the screen.

To send snaps directly to friends or add them to your story tap on either recipient names/icons at the bottom left corner or click "My Story" respectively
– both options are available after taking a photo/video in Snapchat's camera mode.

Remember that snaps sent directly are temporary in nature unless saved by recipients using screenshot functionality within Snapchat itself or via alternative methods outside of Snapchat's control (e.g., another camera). Stories last for 24 hours but can be saved to your memories for future viewing or sharing.

Step 8: Mastering Filters with Practice

The more you experiment and practice with Snapchat filters, the better you'll become at using them effectively. Don't be afraid to think outside the box and combine different filters in unique ways to create eye-catching snaps that stand out from the crowd.

Remember, Snapchat regularly updates its filter library by introducing new ones based on seasons, special events, or collaborations with brands. So stay updated with app updates and explore fresh filters as they become available!

Summary:
Mastering the art of filters on Snapchat is all about letting your creativity run wild. By following this step-by-step guide, you'll quickly become a pro at applying AR-based lenses, exploring additional overlays after capturing snaps, and saving/sharing your creations efficiently. So snap away and have fun expressing yourself through an array of creative filters!
